BALTIMORE (WBFF) — A recent Project Baltimore investigation found 41% of Baltimore City high school students have earned a GPA below 1.0.
Political commentator Armstrong Williams says districts across the country have showed similar trends due to the pandemic.
Meanwhile, Mayor Brandon Scott is releasing his comprehensive crime plan to help curb the violence in Baltimore.
“You have to give the Mayor respect and his props for at least putting this plan in place. There are people who are cautiously optimistic,” Williams says.
The plan focuses on three pillars – public health approach to violence, community engagement and inter-agency collaboration and evaluation and accountability.
Williams says the one thing leaders should also set their sights on is stricter alcohol policies.
“40% of violence, whether we want to talk about it or not, is connected to alcohol. We need to start considering whether or not to revoke alcohol offenders’ rights.”
He also mentions the focus should be shifted to deterrent policing, raising the age for dropping out of the school and eliminating blighted housing.
“Those things must be in place at any plan that any Mayor, any law enforcement division, puts in place if you want to drop, in a very serious way, this increase in violent crime and petty crime.”
