LOS ANGELES, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) — A new study conducted by the Delphi Behavioral Health Group showed residents in San Diego, a California city located near the U.S. and Mexico border, spent more money on alcohol on average in 2017 than any other metropolitan.

The NBC 4 news channel reported on Sunday, the study used data from the Bureau of Labor Statistic’s Consumer Expenditure Survey from 1996 to 2017 in order to reveal American’s current and historical trends in alcohol expenditures, and which demographics burn the most cash on getting buzzed.

In 2017, according to the study, each San Diegans spent about 1,112 U.S. dollars on alcohol in 2017, standing on the top of the list.

In nationwide, the average annual alcohol expenditure of American was 484 U.S. dollars in 2016.

Between 1996 and 2016, the average amount Americans spent on alcohol annually rose by 175 U.S. dollars, representing a 56.6 percent increase over that 20-year period, the study showed, however it was not because people drinking more frequently but paying more for the privilege of the pint.

In 1996, the typical beer in the U.S. cost about 2.61 U.S. dollars and In 2016, the average brew price was 3.99 U.S. dollars, the study explained, adding that it turned out that beer prices surged over 61 percent and wine prices increased by over 150 percent during that time.
