Australia: CONCERN OVER ALCOHOL DELIVERY SERVICES SELLING TO TEENS

AUTHORITIES ARE LOOKING AT WAYS TO PREVENT UNDERAGE TEENS FROM USING ONLINE HOME-DELIVERY SERVICES TO BUY ALCOHOL.

There are multiple apps and websites that sell and deliver alcohol including Airtasker, Liquoroo and Jimmy Brings.

To use these services all that is required is a credit card and a smart phone.

While users are required by law to be 18 years or over, some accounts can be made using fake birthdays that are not required to be verified, and services depend on delivery drivers checking ID upon arrival.

A NSW Office of Liquor and Gaming spokesman said:

“A range of controls are in place to regulate online liquor sales under NSW liquor laws,”

“Businesses that sell and deliver alcohol online must follow strict procedures for verifying the age of the buyer.”

“IT IS AN OFFENCE FOR ALCOHOL ORDERED ONLINE TO BE DELIVERED OR SUPPLIED TO A MINOR.”

“Liquor & Gaming NSW is currently focusing on regulation of online and home delivery alcohol sales.”

“We are checking how businesses operate within current laws, reinforcing responsible service of alcohol requirements and cracking down on irresponsible or illegal businesses.”

A spokesman for Liquoroo said their drivers were subcontractors who aren’t required to have Responsible Service of Alcohol accreditation, and worked off a “trust-based system”
